Jeb Bush Threatens to Kill the Republican Party

Post by UpstateSCHokie »

The sense of entitlement here is mind blowing. These people demand that the conservative base fall in line and vote for their guy when/if he wins the nomination (hello John McCain), but they now indicate that they won't do the same if they don't get their way?

Remember, Jeb Bush was the one that promised to "win the general by losing the primary." In other words, he thought he could win the nomination without the support of the base. He really believed that he only needed the support of the Establishment/"moderate" Republicans. Well now reality is biting him in the ass, and he's acting like a little cry baby. GTH Jeb.

Jeb Bush Threatens to Kill the Republican Party

Fitting, that the Establishment should be the ones to put the gun to the sick party's head and put it out of its misery.

Jeb Bush is considering making a flat declaration that if Trump should win the nomination, he won't vote for him. Fine, except it's been the Establishment's matra forever that we must all Go Along to Get Along.

Allah writes:
If Jeb Bush, establishment princeling, were to declare that he’ll have no part of a Republican Party with Donald Trump as nominee, Trump fans will laugh and extend their middle fingers and other voters will marvel at how quick the elites are to abandon the GOP when it’s having a rare populist moment. The donor class are all proud Republicans right up until the moment they can’t get their way, at which point they're gone. Why should grassroots conservative continue to turn out for lackluster establishment nominees like McCain and Romney if donors won’t return the favor for Trump?
Drew made a point about this a few months ago: the US Chamber of Commerce made similar noises about defecting if their agenda of corporate welfare and government hand-outs weren't greeted more solicitously.

Thus the double-standard so many complain about: The Establishment tells the grassroots not to make demands, and to remain loyal to the party no matter how little of its agenda is pressed for, while the Establishment and the pampered corporate wing feel pretty damn comfortable serving up ultimatums and splitting from the party if their agenda isn't eagerly serviced.

How many times has this happened? The Establishment behaves as if it has a kingly Right to Rule. How many times has a Tea Partier lost to an Establishment figure, only to dutifully endorse and campaign for the Establishment winner; and how many times has a defeated Establishment **** turned around and betrayed the party by throwing the race to a Democrat?

The hell with you. May the devil take you all.

So fine: As we've been saying, Burn It Down. You're Democrats anyway; you're just more realistic than the normal Democrat about how much of your income you're willing to hand over to the government to redistribute to strangers.

I'm sure you can make some compromise with them; you're good at compromising with Democrats. A 70% top marginal tax rate? Split the difference, it's all good.

So go.

Go, and go to hell.

Well... if you step back from what the hard core conservatives want... it makes sense.

The establishment IS the GOP. They have been running the party for decades... that's why they are the establishment. They understood long ago that their numbers are insufficient to win general elections for a variety of reasons... so, they need a "big tent" in order to form a governing coalition to protect their core reason for existing (protecting the interests of the wealthy from the whiny majority).

So... they invited in evangelicals and others decades ago and aligned the GOP message towards topics the newcomers cared about (abortion, religious freedom, blah, blah)... yet those topics are not really the core of being GOP - because the establishment sets the core. When push comes to shove, if faced with the choice of eliminating abortion and gay marriage for all time or giving the rich a 1% tax break, the establishment would take the tax break every time.

The good news about adding in these conservative folks is that they reliably show up for every election and they are easily stirred up (reference: Trump, Donald)... so the GOP can dominate off year elections and have moments where they really blast the Dems. But now, the interloping conservatives want to run the show, control the message and put their concerns over the core GOP message. Many conservatives on here favor that happening... but the establishment is not going to go quietly. The establishment does not really believe in what hard core conservatives want - they understand how bad it would be for the country and more importantly (for them) it does not protect their core principle. So they try to "manage" conservatives to keep getting your vote... and you guys are getting mighty sick of it. It's a tricky dance for them... but they are well funded and well entrenched.

Why would you expect they would give up their core interests?
