It's not really that hard to understand. Favorability polls are different from general election polls. Asking someone what they think of a candidate is not the same as asking them to pick one from a list especially considering in the end there will only be two (or three) to choose from instead of twice that amount. Favorability polls are relevant because they involve what people think right now compared to who would you vote for in this hypothetical matchup that won't actually happen until November and may not even contain these same candidates. Obviously favorability can and does change but it's at least a valid snapshot of what people think of a candidate right now.awesome guy wrote:nolanvt wrote:To be more specific, general election polls. I've gotta hot take: Rubio will not win the nomination.

100% Agree - or at least I'm being an optimist and convincing myself of that.RiverguyVT wrote:First, the primary season is a loooong way from over. It's still the first quarter, folks.
I'm not really sure what Rubio's path to victory is. If Kasich exits that doesn't do it for him. If Cruz exits, what % go to him vs. Trump? I can't imagine it is that favorable for Rubio. Maybe then it is a numbers game - i.e. Trump has a ceiling.
Good point.RiverguyVT wrote:Second, (and surprised this isn't mentioned in this thread yet) is anyone REALLY surprised that a casino magnate won Nevada? Really?
Yeah, definitely a crazy race. Trump isn't a conservative. Right now he's a caricature of the republican party. He's taking the conservative wing issues to the extreme - he's basically trolling the party. If he's on record in the past as being not conservative he ignores it, or owns it (planned parenthood) and people don't care.RiverguyVT wrote: Does it strike anyone else that this race is already unlike any they've seen. I mean..REALLY unlike any other?
Trump- what a paradox. I don't believe he's conservative, so think that on some level, the dems would love him. But his unfavorables are almost as bad as Hillary!->'s are. I do not believe he's a shoe in as R. If he does get the nomination, I do not believe he's an automatic win vs. Hillary!-> or Bernie.
Bernie- socialism. Seriously, folks?
Bernie is great. He's a genuine Trump (or he's fooled me). I love listening to him, but certainly don't support him.
Mitt at least won New Hampshire.RiverguyVT wrote:I am beginning to wonder if Rubio will be this year's Mitt...and Cruz last cycle's Santorum.
Pubs should have two questions. How can a candidate win the R nomination. And, how can that candidate win the electoral college.

At this point it's Rubio or Trump. Cruz doesn't seem to have the support from evangelicals that he needs (for whatever reason). If the Republicans want to stop Trump they need to get Kasich out of the race as soon as possible and rally around Rubio. That's their best (and pretty much only) shot.HokieJoe wrote:I've gotta hot take: Rubio will not win the nomination.

I'll stick with my hot take prediction. It won't matter if Kasich jettisons early. The only thing that might change the outcome is if D voters switch their affiliation and vote in the R primary. Otherwise, Rubio and Cruz are probably toast. Cruz is the biggest threat to Trump because their voters hold some commonalities. That's why Trump went after Cruz. It's the same reason Bloomberg would target Hillary (were he to enter the race). R voters won't vote for Bloomberg. And Rubio voters won't vote for Trump.

If the election is Clinton vs Trump, I expect, hopefully, that Trump will light her ass on fire mercilessly.

How much do you think that wall will cost? $300M? $1B? Mexico imports are around $300M per year. So, you put a tariff of 5%? That's %15M per year. And then the goods from Mexico go up in price. And the increase in tariffs means an increase in the goods sold. So, the US consumer pays the extra amount. I know plenty of conservative people who hate the thought of Trump being the nominee much less the idea of him being President. In fact, I was talking with a co-worker (who is a big Cruz fan) and he said if it ends up being Trump vs Clinton he's just going to write in Cruz. The idea that Trump is only disliked by liberals is simply not true. He's disliked by a wide swath of people which is why his favorability ratings are awful.miles wrote:Some of the irrationality manifested by Trump hate is evident in this thread. What's interesting about that is that Trump is the only candidate (outside of Kasich) whose % of voters calling him "average" would still not be enough to tip the scale of his favorability > 50%.absolutvt03 wrote:I know plenty of conservative people who hate the thought of Trump being the nominee much less the idea of him being President. Ha. Doh!! The main point is that the tariff increase will still flow down to the US consumers. That's the way it always works. And the US exports to Mexico are roughly the same. So, Mex also has the option to raise their tariffs, which hurts US businesses.Bay_area_Hokie wrote:Mexico imports to the US are about $300B a year according to the US Gov't.HokieFanDC wrote:How much do you think that wall will cost? $300M? $1B? Bottom line, it's just not as simple as raising a tariff. I think Trump knows that, but he's not an economist, so he might not.

Let's just get this out of the way. Trump is a million times smarter than you are. Same with Sarah Palin. So these insults on their intelligence is high comedy coming from you.HokieFanDC wrote:Ha. Mexico imports are around $300M per year. So, you put a tariff of 5%? That's %15M per year. And then the goods from Mexico go up in price. And the increase in tariffs means an increase in the goods sold. So, the US consumer pays the extra amount. Brilliant.Bay_area_Hokie wrote:I don't think he has to get into the nuts and bolts of things. He has built a lot of buildings and I bet he knows nothing about structural engineering. If you think he can't prepare himself for a 1:1 debate you are nuts. He has a high motor, especially for his age.
But I think when he gets into nuts and bolts policy discussion, he will be exposed. GOP candidates and debate moderators have tried and you see the results. He, like Rubio, goes back to his canned speech. "We're gonna build a wall. It's gonna be a great wall. HUUUUUGE! And Mexico will pay for it. America doesn't win anymore. We're gonna win again. We're gonna win so much we will be bored with winning... blah, blah, blah."
Now that the field is reduced, I expect he will get called out to explain HOW... other than being HUUUGE and awesome himself... he will accomplish anything he promises. And he will be exposed because he can't explain it. That's not his thing.
He is no wonk, that's for sure. This will cause him a lot of frustration which could lead to issues in the campaign, but I think this "details thing" is way over blown. What the hell did Obama know about anything? He never even had a real job his entire life.
As for the wall, I will tell you what he plans on doing. He will slap a tariff on all good manufactured in Mexico and that's how he will pay for it.
I know conservatives understand this math, because every time a new sales and use tax, or other tax on businesses is proposed, they correctly say that the consumer will be footing the bill.

Bottom line, it's just not as simple as raising a tariff. I think Trump knows that, but he's not an economist, so he might not.

That means a lot coming from the board troll. I like how you can't refute my opinion on what would happen, rather you go straight to insults. And I didn't insult Trump's intelligence. Not sure what the Palin reference is all about.awesome guy wrote:Let's just get this out of the way. Trump is a million times smarter than you are. Same with Sarah Palin. You idiots define a troll as someone you routinely corrects your moronic positions. Like here, a dipshit like you insulting Trump's economic knowledge when he runs circle round a nobody like you. It's hilarious, you might as well claim Michael Vick is slower than you.HokieFanDC wrote: That means a lot coming from the board troll. Ha! Conservatives getting on board with tariffs would be hilarious, all in the name of building a wall to keep Mexicans out.
