More importantly, they're not swayed by Nolans and VisorBoys with emotional arguments:

Yeah, the same people that generally don't let foreigners into the country, a low birth rate, and a lost two decades. A few foreigners in their country could have helped them out a couple decades ago. Instead they keep with their culture and are stuck in economic doldrums. Their history is the exact opposite of the U.S., it's part of the reason why their "growth" has sucked for the last two decades.

the euro has been flooded with muslim immigrants, is the euro in great shape?? not really. Japan's issues are varied but I doubt immigrants that are not the brightest bulbs on the planet would have helped that country. Never mind that it is a small country and part of it was nuked a couple of years ago by the reactor melt down

Japan is betting on automation /AI. It's a risky bet, but it may work.
Their demographic problem has nothing to do with lack of immigration, that's insanity. They have a demographic problem because nobody can afford to have children.

Yep. I'd rather have a shrinking population than one morphing into Muslim heathens.

They have a closed society which has not benefited them over the last couple decades. They could learn a lot from a few outsiders but that hasn't been possible. The "genius" of not letting Muslims in has nothing to do with Muslims and everything to do with Japan. They don't want anyone coming in and that has been to their detriment, that was my point. Major Kong made the same point, just didn't tie it to economics.

I am not sure what you are reading, Kong did not say that. Japan is a small country and immigration would not have benefited them, Real estate is already sky high due to the lack of land so adding alot of unskilled immigrants would help them, how? Japan's problem is they were the low cost mfg country and have been supplanted by other low cost countries, tie that into their lack of land mass and the high cost of living and yes it has gotten more difficult for them. FYI, China is in the same situation, low cost mfg country where costs have gone up and are now losing mfg to other lower cost countries

Because Japanese politicians and guilty middle class don't give a excrement about the votes of illegal immigrants like the left wing politicians and nolan's of the world do here.

Your syllogistic argument purposely conflates "closed society" with immigration - and the rest of it is unsupported and makes no sense. The two aren't remotely synonymous. If anything, their welfare state and stagnant childbirth rate are borrowed from the west.
As I said, they think AI / automation will save them and produce wealth to care for their aging, shrinking population and crushing debt. If their gamble pays off, there's nothing culturally wrong with that. What definitely WILL NOT help is importing droves of rent seekers into a welfare state, as Europe is discovering.

Failure isn't an option in Japanese culture, that's their problem. As a result they've had zombie banks and companies. They didn't deal with banks or failed companies like the U.S. Acceptance of a few corporate outsiders would have done them a lot of good. They'd be ecstatic with the U.S. growth following the financial crisis.

I thought about Japan specifically when reading an article last week about the immigration policy of Scandinavian nations. Interesting.

Yup. The Economist won't ever say that though.
More so, they're True Believer keynesians. After their defeat in WWII, they absorbed everything western. Especially management sciences and economics. Deming and Juran brought the quality control movement to them, something the west scoffed at. They embraced Keynes and they've been operating off those models ever since. Calling it a closed society isn't really true. They reach out and embrace what they think is better(typically after abject failure) while be methodological and rejecting things they think are detrimental to their society. They haven't failed enough yet to dump Keynesian economics.

We almost certainly would have fallen into the same trap (some might say we are) had we not witnessed what happened to them. That's some fantastic Monday morning quarterback'ing.
They have effing Paul Krugman advising them on fiscal policy steering their economy into the ditch and you call them a closed society?

They just need more Krugmans and illiterate third-worlders to fix everything.
