Who's going to see Dunkirk?
I've been thinking to myself this is going to be the best movie of the year. Critics are starting to come out saying the same.
Of course, I'm waiting to see Valerian, Blade Runner and the new Star Wars movie, but in the realm of movies that could actually pull in the Oscar for best picture, I think this is it.

Haven't done much research yet (only see maybe 1 movie a year in theaters) - how badly did Hollywood butcher the history? Is the British Army half black transvestites?

Not sure. LOL.USN_Hokie wrote:Haven't done much research yet (only see maybe 1 movie a year in theaters) - how badly did Hollywood butcher the history? Is the British Army half black transvestites?
I've seen more movies this year than I have in a while. I'm going to read up on the history part, but one review said Nolan took some of the scenes from personal accounts.

We need to have a "UWS most innocuous post turned into a purse fight in less than three responses" contest or something.
H2's "new car having fart evacuators" thread was a strong start, but I think we can do better.

Re: Who's going to see Dunkirk?
Going to see it. Very few movies that I actually look forward to, this is one.
Funny thing is WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam movies are can't miss to me. Can not watch anything about recent conflicts like BlackHawk Down, American Sniper etc. Maybe too close to home to see it is entertainment or something, but I just can't do it.

Looks like the only thing 1984 got wrong was the date.
Re: Who's going to see Dunkirk?
I'm a history buff, but this story isn't appealing to me militarily. Dunkirk was the culmination of the allies getting their arses kicked. It was really a low point - Hitler let them escape.Vienna_Hokie wrote:Going to see it. Very few movies that I actually look forward to, this is one.

The great story is civilians taking everything they had to get them out. It's a humanitarian triumph, not a military one.
I do share your aversion to modern military movies/series. For me, it's because they're usually either disgustfully political, or "war porn." I can't watch any of the crap on TV with the "SEALs" anywhere in the title or description.
Re: Who's going to see Dunkirk?
Need to watch a couple WWII documentaries on Netflix to get caught up on things.

Nah, they'll have a bunch of Mary Sues flying Spitfires and saving the day.

If you ever do get the stomach for it, Blackhawk Down was an excellent movie IMO.

Oh yeah, it's so obvious that it would be perfect.HokieJoe wrote:USN_Hokie wrote:Haven't done much research yet (only see maybe 1 movie a year in theaters) - how badly did Hollywood butcher the history? Is the British Army half black transvestites?

Re: Who's going to see Dunkirk?
American Sniper is quite good as well (even though I now have new found disgust with Bradley Manning). It was directed by Eastwood so its not one of these anti-America war movies like Jar Head. I also thoroughly enjoyed Act of Valor.HokieJoe wrote:Vienna_Hokie wrote:Going to see it. Very few movies that I actually look forward to, this is one.

I was part of the team that designed that embassy in Mogadishu. Had been open less than a year when they breached the gate. Really sad to see all that work destroyed.HokieJoe wrote:Vienna_Hokie wrote:Going to see it. Very few movies that I actually look forward to, this is one.
