So ... how high do taxes go?

Now that democrats have a lock on both houses, how high do they raise Virginia's taxes? 5.75% is currently the top rate. I'm thinking it goes up to at least 10.

You guys have a conservative Democrat as a governor. You will be fine.BigDave wrote:Now that democrats have a lock on both houses, how high do they raise Virginia's taxes? 5.75% is currently the top rate. I'm thinking it goes up to at least 10.

10% in the near term? In this political cycle? I'd say that's pretty unlikely. They will certainly look to raise revenue through taxes because God knows they won't cut the budget. But 10% would shock me and that would likely be enough to make their majority short lived (hopefully).BigDave wrote:Now that democrats have a lock on both houses, how high do they raise Virginia's taxes? 5.75% is currently the top rate. LOL.....all the Democrats want is a march to Socialism by incrementalism. I can’t wait to see what happens to VA now that they have complete control. Dems march in lock step, so it shouldn’t take long to find out. It’s gonna be the free shiRt army coming to the rescue.ip_law-hokie wrote:You guys have a conservative Democrat as a governor. They're not going to go up to 10% for everyone - they're going to go up to 10% for the "rich" (and by rich, we mean "upper middle class"). And once that happens, it's the same game as with federal taxes. You can raise taxes on the supposed "rich" all day long, but you can never cut them because that's demagogued as "tax cuts for the rich".BG Hokie wrote:10% in the near term? In this political cycle? The disgusting, racist ad aside..how did that happen? Didn't the repubs need to lose 17 seats? Thats absurd??BigDave wrote:Now that democrats have a lock on both houses, how high do they raise Virginia's taxes? 5.75% is currently the top rate. I'm thinking it goes up to at least 10.
Get used to it, so long as "nova" is nova and dudes like CPRV hokie vote in tidewater.....you would think two of the 3 richest counties in the United States would be conservative/republican- you know, the evil rich people warren and bernie hate..but "these" rich people work for the government- that changes the game. Virginia will be blue the next 60 years.BigDave wrote:They're not going to go up to 10% for everyone - they're going to go up to 10% for the "rich" (and by rich, we mean "upper middle class"). Virginia has what is almost a flat tax - it's graduated, but you hit the 5.75% tax rate at $17K of income. So it's almost flat.
I predict that what they do first is they phase out the lower brackets - so if you make over, say, $80K, then you do pay a flat 5.75% tax. That's "fair", right? Then they will add 6% at $100K and 7% at $200K, because the rich ought to pay their fair share.
And it's completely impossible to ever cut taxes because only the rich would benefit from the tax cut.
CPRV hokie - god that guy is such an annoying arrogant/ignorant turd. So glad he doesn't post over here.CFB Apologist wrote:

Typical liberal white dude that lived/lives in the ghetto- which is fine- but EVERYTHING to him is racist, every white dude has an agenda against minorities, every post is hidden racism, UWS etc. He blasted daisyWV the other day with "what do you mean the Miami players look like thugs"..- he knew exactly what she meant and he got pissed/offended because she is correct.UpstateSCHokie wrote:CPRV hokie - god that guy is such an annoying arrogant/ignorant turd. Seems to me that Uppity and CFB need their safe space. Not CPRV.HokieJoe wrote:UpstateSCHokie wrote:CPRV hokie - god that guy is such an annoying arrogant/ignorant turd. So glad he doesn't post over here.CFB Apologist wrote:

Nah, he should come over. See how he does outside his little safe space.
The Lounge isn't even safe enough for him. He had to give himself a 2 week timeout in full FloHo fashion because I was factsplaining to him.HokieJoe wrote:UpstateSCHokie wrote:CPRV hokie - god that guy is such an annoying arrogant/ignorant turd. A conservative Democrat is one that only votes with the party 95% of the time. Its a huge difference.ip_law-hokie wrote:You guys have a conservative Democrat as a governor. I think NC is taxed pretty highly, but their infrastructure is in far better shape than Virginia's. After living in Florida, I also like the "use tax" tolls that they put on many of their state roads. It works and the toll roads are well maintained. I'm all for more of those but not ones that flex with demand like the beltway.Hokie CPA wrote:If they're smart they'll fix the gasoline tax problem first. It needs to be doubled and indexed for inflation (gas tax should be about 10% of the average price per gallon of gasoline rather than the flat 13¢ per gallon, or whatever it is, the Commonwealth currently collects).
If they want to raise the income tax, the creation of new brackets makes the most sense. Maybe create a 0% bracket at the bottom and create a 7% bracket for VATI greater than $50,000.
I thought the gas tax was already converted to a percentage-based tax when McDonnell was governor?Hokie CPA wrote:If they're smart they'll fix the gasoline tax problem first.
