I'll stick up for the Manchester area of Chesterfield... and Richmond, too.
Once it was a VERY vibrant area, carrying historical significance. In chesterfield near chippenham, there has been some gentrification, sure. Where isn't there? Manchester in Richmond has become blighted.
Hull Street, many do not realize, was once hoity-toity near Jeff Davis.
Coal was brought to Manchester from Midlothian on the nation's second oldest rail line (approx 15 miles long). FWIW, the line being credited as the nation's oldest, in Philly, is a mere 100 meters or so by comparison.
It seems that Manchester as it used to be known doesn't really exist anymore. Chippenham split it, the city annexed part of it at the turn of the century (1900s), so the Chesterfield Manchester lost identity while the city version Manchester did not.
Manchester in Chesterfield basically served to house all the DuPont and Allied Chemical folks.
The Manchester area? I understand it was a city back in the day, like Brooklyn and Manhattan. But it's just been a name of a school that has moved down 360 over the years.
And AG is right. While Richmond proper is doing great, Chesterfield has gone down hill. If I were to relocate to Richmond, I would live in the city.
