In what would be one of the biggest shakeups of the U.S. food-stamp program in its five-decade history, President Donald Trump is proposing to slash cash payments and substitute them with "100 percent American grown food" given to recipients.
The changes, outlined Monday in Trump’s budget proposal, would reshape the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which supports roughly one in eight Americans, by reducing cash spending by about one-third from current levels.
The plan is part of an effort to reform SNAP and save a projected $214 billion over a decade. It would give all households receiving more than $90 a month in cash a food-aid package that would "include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish," according to the proposal.

Don’t they have all the cash register systems programmed to not take food stamp for dog food and beer? Why don’t they just do the same for twinkies?

The only people that would disagree or see a "downside" to this proposal are 1. People that hate Trump, no matter what policy/law/recommendations he brings forth and 2. Globalist trash that think 3 hot, good meals a day on white china is a birthright, and no cuts to free food programs are acceptable.

What is going to be the added administrative cost of the government procuring food? There is a lot to it. And is this cost going to consume any potential savings (the government can't do anything efficiently)?

There’s still a lot of cushion in the savings for Gov inefficiency.133743Hokie wrote:What is going to be the added administrative cost of the government procuring food? There is a lot to it. And is this cost going to consume any potential savings (the government can't do anything efficiently)?
It does sound good in theory, though. The bigger issues with programs like this usually come from food quality.

or make the food cards non-transferrable, cannot be used unless used by the one it is issued to, takes all the scamming out of the system. And put tight restrictions on what can be bought133743Hokie wrote:What is going to be the added administrative cost of the government procuring food? There is a lot to it. SNAP cards are like debit cards, they have a PIN number. Obviously, anyone can give someone their PIN.cwtcr hokie wrote:or make the food cards non-transferrable, cannot be used unless used by the one it is issued to, takes all the scamming out of the system. And there are pretty tight restrictions on what you can buy. It's limited to food items. That includes candy and chips, but other than that, it's a pretty good list IMO.

Trump needs to market this as an extension to Michelle Obama's school lunch program. He's only doing it to help combat childhood obesity and adult type II diabetes.

Agree that what can be purchased is better controlled now, but there us a huge black market in selling cards for cash.HokieFanDC wrote:SNAP cards are like debit cards, they have a PIN number. Re: Trump Budget Would Scrap Food Stamps
I can't imagine that there is any savings. The govt. isn't going to ship food to people. That's inefficient and cost prohibitive, and people are too mobile. So are they going to set up pick-up centers? Again inefficient and cost prohibitive. Are they going to bulk purchase thru grocery stores and have it boxed for pickup? Very cumbersome. Who is allowed to make tge pick up? What about all the low income areas without grocery stores? Plus, the grocery business is high volume, low profit margin, so again i don't see where any cost savings will come from.HokieFanDC wrote:There’s still a lot of cushion in the savings for Gov inefficiency.133743Hokie wrote:What is going to be the added administrative cost of the government procuring food? It's prison food. Basically leftovers from the past few days (apparently the worst of the leftovers - which I guess could be assumed by being leftover), lumped together and baked. Some states have considered it inhumane (I'm sure there is a better legal word).133743Hokie wrote:Is that like Vegimite?TheH2 wrote:Just give them some nutraloaf!HokieFanDC wrote:There’s still a lot of cushion in the savings for Gov inefficiency.133743Hokie wrote:What is going to be the added administrative cost of the government procuring food? I thought there were decent controls on what they can buy but seriously, make them only workable for the actual person the card is issued to, ya know that pesky ID thingieHokieFanDC wrote:SNAP cards are like debit cards, they have a PIN number.
