There are 2 items here.

One, if someone did steal the diary, they should be arrested and charged. But, that's not really the main story. Does it really matter in the long run whether it was stolen or left there, as long as it's actually real??

Two, that diary has some f'ed up stuff in it. Serious things that at the least show a girl with a really traumatic childhood.
Combine her diary entries with Hunter's messed up life and it paints a pretty bad picture.
They won't, but the media should take it seriously.
