This is part of Putin's inane "annexed" territory that he assured the world would be protected by his nuke umbrella and that he wasn't bluffing this time. Kherson was the only regional capital that Russia managed to take in their invasion.

Once Ukraine consolidates these gains, parts of Crimea will now be within range of Ukrainian-operated artillery that they are borrowing as part of lend/lease. Yesterday was a very bad day for Putin...but its about to get much worse for him. NATO needs to surge up weapons shipments to hasten peace negotiations, which can begin once Russia retreats all the way back to 2013 Russian borders. Those peace talks can discuss how Putin's successor can structure reparations payments to Ukraine.
