Visited mt Rushmore. Not much diversity in that sculpture.

Post by oaktonhokie »

No blacks, no women, no injuns or Muslims.

Probably no gaze.

I doubt they could make a monument like that today.

If they get rid of Theodore Rosenfeld and Lincoln, they will have room for Obama and his Dumbo ears.

Beautiful monument.

Spent time in the black hills. Still no sign of rocky racoon.
If you bend over backwards long enough,
eventually you'll fall down.

That these are your thoughts when visiting such a magnificent monument speaks volumes about character.

On a motorcycle or family trip? SD is just one of my 5 last states to visit. My FIL just got back from there as he was at Sturgis. I want to go some kind of bad, but really just in passing for fly fishing in Montana or Yellowstone.

Awesome! Fly fishing too or just site seeing? You could spend a couple days in Yellowstone. Just the park is larger than several states. I think it takes about 2-3 hours to drive straight through.

I go fishing at kroger. :)

Just tourist stuff here.

Rushmore was very impressive.

Likewise the Badlands. Not as impressive as the grand canyon but very cool.

Montana and Wyoming are great...Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Devils Tower (which is just an easy jaunt from Mt. Rushmore), Glacier National Park and Butte (for mining purposes). So much to see so little time.

After Yellowstone what is the agenda?

The Grand Canyon is probably as impressive of a sight as there is North America. After awhile your eyes just get overwhelmed. I prefer the North Rim but the South Rim is as good.

I would rate the Grand Canyon and Denali as 1 and 1A in the US...in re to North America I would add Barranca del Cobre in Chihuahua and the Kluane National Park in Yukon and BC...ah hell just add the whole international park area to the list. :)

Spent yesterday at Yellowstone. Beautiful.

Herds of buffalo. One stopped right in front of the car. I did not ask him to move.

Huge elk. Huge. Straight out of the nature channel.

Going back today to see old faithful and the rest of the park.

There's something in there called Grand Canyon at Yellowstone. It's amazing. As for the other Grand Canyon, I agree. The most magnificent natural site I have ever seen. I was there for 5 minutes and said that if I had to leave immediately, the five minutes I was there would have been worth the trip.

Jackson hole tomorrow. Then Utah.

Never did see anything about rocky raccoon. I believe those Beatles just made that up.

If you're planning on staying in a motel in Montana or ND, make sure you have reservations. We did that whole trip thing couple of years ago from Denver to Cheyenne to Jackson Hole through Yellowstone to Billings to Little Big Horn and there we were motel challenged. Got the last room available anywhere in Billings and expected to stay somewhere near Roosevelt National park that night. Ended up driving all the way to Spearfish, SD before we could find a room and got the last one available there. Drove the next day to Sturgis and from there to the Monument. Ended up back in Denver for a day and then back to Cheyenne for the big rodeo. Reason for the lack of rooms along the way was due to the oil field workers having taken them all over for months at a time. Wish we had been smart enough to check that out before we left, but it was a great trip.
