Democrats wanted a so-called "clean" budget bill. (It wasn't really clean - it increased non-defense discretionary spending and cut defense discretionary spending, the magnitude of the former being larger than the magnitude of the latter.) But it was only for a month and a half. Now that the Republicans are talking about a longer-term deal, the whole crux of the issue comes into focus. Regardless of what budget is approved, on January 15 the sequester gets re-applied. So Democrats are only willing to make the deal if Republicans do away with the tiny amount of cuts that were done in the sequester.
What happened to the "law of the land" being sacrosanct? We can't defund Obamacare because it's the law of the land! But we can do away with the sequester because we don't like that one.

Taking America hostage, negotiating with a gun, terrorism!
The democrats are shameless bastards. It's getting time to just round them all up in a truck and drive that truck into the river. They're why we can't have a nice nation. 17 trillion in debt and they're doing all they can to keep on spending? Are they crazy, stupid, or is something else going on? It's suicidal to hold on to outrageous spending like this. Do they just not get it? Or is this the collapse they've clamouring for to rebuild a true socialist nation? Maybe they know an asteroid is heading towards Earth and so debt really doesn't matter? I don't understand their position without thinking of them as idiots or intentionally destructive.

Democrats are like the Navy Yard Shooter, stalking the nation, looking for any taxpayer they can blow away.

Respectfully disagree. The shutdown and the debt limit shenanigans thus far has been all about the Rs overplaying their hand. The Ds are now talking about the sequester... which would be them overplaying their hand.BigDave wrote:Democrats wanted a so-called "clean" budget bill. Without question, the Ds want to negotiate over the sequester cuts set to take effect on 1/15. There is the leverage the Rs need. IMHO, I also wonder if this issue is really being floated now so that the Rs can save face by passing the clean CR. This way, the Rs can go back to their base and say the shutdown was worth something.
Now... the Ds are in position to overplay their hand. I expect the country will go along with a short term CR to allow Ds and Rs to negotiate what happens on 01/15. But if the Ds insist on adding cuts to the sequester in the CR... they will have overplayed their hand... and then they will be seen as bad as the Rs currently are.

so defunding existing law is now fashionable? I was looking forward to another rant on existing law, will of the people, etc.VoiceOfReason wrote:Respectfully disagree. Don't forget that the shutdown had nothing to do with the budget.BigDave wrote:Democrats wanted a so-called "clean" budget bill. You will not get it from me. If the Rs are willing to send forward the clean CR, the Ds should sign it. The Rs have been asking for negotiation and if the Ds want to come to the table asking for sequestration relief, that should be negotiated. And the Ds will need to give something (spending cuts in other areas) to get something.awesome guy wrote: so defunding existing law is now fashionable? Just like I said about the Rs...

I agree with that, except the part where the Ds will be seen as bad as the Rs currently are. The people supporting the Dems are not nearly as concerned about fiscal conservatism as Rs, and just think that any discussions about cutting spending, or the budget, is to be blamed on the Rs.VoiceOfReason wrote:Respectfully disagree. Also, talking about cuts to the sequester, or anything less obvious than that a govt shutdown is bad, just causes 90% of US citizens eyes to glaze over.
